Miflora M. Gatchalian International Medal of APQO Awarded to a SLAQ Member
Asia Pacific Quality Organization (APQO) awarded the Miflora M. Gatchalian Medal of Walter L. Hurd Foundation – International Award for Excellent Woman Professional in Quality Leadership 2010 for Pathmani Mangalika de Silva of Sri Lanka. This award was made on the 17th of September 2010 at the 16th Annual Convention of the Asia Pacific Quality Organization held at the University of Katmandu, Nepal.
This medal was offered to a woman quality professional who had made an outstanding contribution to the quality movement both nationally and internationally. Also the person should have received recognition as a quality professional. Dedication, competitiveness and demonstrated leadership in the promotion of quality practices are among many other stringent requirements in deciding of the award.
This medal requires a person to be of high level of integrity, effective involvement and with distinguished contributions to the quality movement. The awardees need to be role models for demonstrating leadership in the promotion of quality practices and will be considered as a benchmark for best practice.
APQO is the apex body coordinating the quality movement in the Asia Pacific Region in association with all the leading professional bodies promoting quality globally (www.apqo.org).
De Silva happened to be the 6th woman quality professional to receive this prestigious award after those from China, India, Israel, Iran and USA. SLAQ consider this as a great honour and will certainly encourage the quality movement in the country.
De Silva is a holder of BSc (Hon) in Science, MSc in Analytical Chemistry and MBA from the University of Colombo. She had obtained LLB and is now an Attorney-at-Law. She is also a Chartered Chemist, IRCA (UK) registered Lead Auditor and Fellow of SLAQ.
She had served in Sri Lanka Standards Institution (SLSI) for many years and contributed in promoting quality concepts in the industry as a trainer, auditor, and national quality award examiner and participated in management systems and product certification and national quality award programs and standards formulation.
Now Mangalika is an internationally qualified Lead Auditor and a trainer for auditing and training on quality, food safety, environment and occupational health & safety management systems and experience in auditing various industries in many countries in the South East Asian Region. She is considered to be an effective auditor as she emphasizes on business improvement.
She was the editor for news journals of the national standards institution and “Quality Today” and “Junior Quality Manager” of the SLAQ. These publications had significantly contributed to the quality awareness in the industry as well as among school children.
Mangalika was actively involved in establishing the Sri Lanka Association for Quality (SLAQ), which was a dire need to promote quality professionalism in the country and served in the Executive Committee for many years in various capacities. She was instrumental for organizing first International quality convention with APQO in 1999 in Sri Lanka and three more quality conventions subsequently which brought in many national quality initiatives in the country.
Now she is the managing partner of Quality International Certification Services (Pvt) Ltd (QICS) which provides accredited certification and Quality International Technical Services (Pvt) Ltd (QITS) which provides accredited training programs. QICS provides an opportunity for organizations to have access to certification and training with high degree of credibility and international recognition and focus on business improvement.
Mangalika de Silva is selected to promote the ‘Quality for the Next Generation’ of SLAQ and she will be developing many programs focused on school children in the next 3 years.
